The Development of Hand-pedaled Tricycles for HWI
This series of hand-pedaled tricycle prototypes was developed for His Wheels International (HWI) and is now in production in the U.S. and abroad. Among other things, HWI works to provide mobility for the disabled (often polio or land mine survivors) through the local African church. They were interested in a simplified and rugged design that could be built in Africa with local manpower.
The DOTT (dual offset tube trike) The final development of three generations of experimental tricycles prototyped for HWI. Designed in cooperation with a physical therapist, nearly any knee or ankle angle can be supported. Adjustments in all major dimensions will allow such a tricycle to be fitted to an unusually wide range of older children and adults, even adapting to them as they grow. This final version represents the best all-around compromise between flexible ergonomics, performance, manufacturability and cost.
